SuperTimer II - Hardware Installation

Installing the Hardware:

SuperTimer II uses mostly "standard" modular telephone cables. "Standard" is in quotes because there are several standards and most of them look identical. Appendix I in the User's Manual deals with the differences if you have to replace a cable in an emergency.

The system is shipped with three 100-foot RJ-11 cables (Lane 1, Center, Lane 2) and one RJ-45 cable to connect SuperTimer II to the Signal Distribution Assembly. A fifth cable connects SuperTimer II (RJ-11) to the computer serial port. (DB-9)

Looking at the underside of SuperTimer II connect the cables in a clockwise direction starting in the lower left corner at the connector labeled ‘LINEOUT’.

LINEOUT:

This is an output of the announce amplifier that is designed to connect to an external public address system. Use ONLY this connector for that purpose. Under no circumstances use the SPKR connector. The LINEOUT connector is a standard connector known as a ‘phono’ or ‘RCA’ or ‘RCA pin plug’ connector. It should be connected, if you wish, to your public address system “line in” or “aux” input using a cable that you supply.

SPKR:

This is an output of the announce amplifier (3 Watts) that is designed to drive the speakers we provide. Do not attempt to use other speakers if you do not fully understand all the ramifications of the next sentence. The speakers are wired in series, there is NO ground connection, both outputs come from out of phase BTL amplifiers, connection to ground will cause a nuclear explosion.

NOTE: the small shaft on the front panel labeled ‘Volume’ controls both the LINEOUT output and the SPKR output. Because the SPKR output does NOT contain any signal from the public address system’s microphone input, the SuperTimer II speakers can be quite loud in the announce area without risk of causing acoustic feedback.

FINISH LINE:

This is the only RJ-45 connector on the circuit board (just like an RJ-11 but wider). Connect the RJ-45 cable from this connector to the Signal Distribution Assembly. Other Signal Distribution Assembly connections are described later

COMPUTER:

This is the RJ-11 connector in the upper right corner labeled ‘COMPUTER’. Connect the RJ-11/DB-9 cable from this connector to your computer serial port. Note that the RJ-11 to DB-9 converter on the end of the cable is glued in place so that it won’t get lost. This cable is not shipped if you did not order the RaceManager Option.

STARTGATE:

This connector is currently not active but may be used in the future to provide an optional run time function.

At the Signal Distribution Assembly:

POWER:

Plug the Power module into a 110 Volt AC supply. You may wish to postpone connecting power to the Signal Distribution Assembly at this time since SuperTimer II will not ‘see’ the finish sensors and continuously repeat the request to align them.

LANE LIGHTS:

You may connect up to 500 Watts per Lane. The outlets are labeled. Sensor/Emitter connections are described under Setting up the Finish Line.
